Google Assistant will no longer have Auto Mode, Only Maps will be kept
We return to talk about the doomed fate of Google Assistant’s Auto Mode a few days after the last time, and this time the news is even worse: while Google initially mentioned only the integration of Maps in this mode of use, this version had been denied by the facts – ie by the Google app – and now the speech is officially expanded: it will be the entire mode, announced during the 2019 edition of Google I / O, to disappear completely.

In a nutshell, just over a year after its introduction, Google announced the removal of only the Google Maps tab that appears at the top of the Car Mode Dashboard (commonly known as the home screen).
Things aren’t quite like that, as Big G quickly confirmed: the entire dashboard of Google Assistant’s Car Mode will be removed from circulation on November 21, 2022. The screen in question provides a slew of useful features, including musical suggestions and quick access to audio controls, as well as shortcuts for calls and messages, and can be accessed (for the time being) via voice commands or a shortcut in the home.
In short, with this new strategic decision, the Mountain View behemoth has decided to eliminate the only true direct successor of Android Auto for smartphones: while for many users, this was already a step backward, for many others, it was not too late. In any case, everyone will have to put their hearts at ease: Google is continuing to remove from Assistant functions that are not fully manageable via voice assistant (remember Snapshot?). And Auto Mode is the next victim on the list.
Reasons for the decision: Long live Google Maps:
In reading about such a drastic decision you are probably wondering what prompted Google to take it and above all – given the farewell of Android Auto for smartphones a year ago – how the experience of using certain services will change while driving a vehicle without a dedicated display for infotainment (or in any case support for Android Auto tout court ).
Well, the same Google has reported to the colleagues of Android Police that the choice to say goodbye to the Assistant’s Auto Mode originates from the fact that most of the users usually interact with it via Google Maps; for this reason, it will be Maps that will become the new reference point for drivers.
Rather than access the dedicated mode via voice command or a shortcut in the home, it will flow directly into the navigation of Google Maps, complete with pop-up notifications for incoming calls and messages. These prompts can be managed via large icons on the screen or more simply by using voice commands, so as not to take your hands off the wheel. The app grid itself stays firmly in place, offering quick access to various services and shortcuts.
On the whole, Google is removing the Assistant mode, but this should not have an impact on the user experience: while the Maps app is still open every time you tell Assistant where you want to go, the useful functions of the voice assistant are made available right within Maps, even if you start navigation directly from this app. The speech continues, but it still sounds like a strong rejection of Google Assistant’s Auto Mode, which was never truly capable of resurrecting the legacy of Android Auto on smartphones.
