Google Discover tests new cards, the Google app replaces Snapshot

Over the past few weeks we’ve seen a number of new features introduce and arrive for Google applications and services, and today we look at another test of the new cards for Google Discover and the change that begins to make its way into the Google app.

After checking out a long list of news over the past two days, also relevant to widgets including, at a glance, Google Play Protect, Android Auto, Google Maps, Google Phone, and the security of Android apps, let’s see what else they change. Are working in Mountain View.

Google Discover: new cards for sports and finance under test

Speaking of Google Discover (and also the Google app), last week we talked about the news about the new weather card, now located immediately below the search bar and, therefore, easier to keep an eye on.

Apparently, however, the graphic renewal in progress is not limited to that: the colleagues of 9to5Google have noticed the appearance, in the same position, of new information sheets regarding the sports teams followed by the user and the financial market. In both cases, the insertion mechanism is similar: the size of the weather card is halved and it is moved to the right, while the new card appears on the left.

In the case of the sports-themed card, it includes the name of the team, the logo of the same and in the lower part the words “ Tap for latest news ”. A tap on the tab simply performs a Google search with the name of the team followed, showing the latest news, the results of the most recent and upcoming matches in the foreground.

The business and finance themed card, on the other hand, shows the current price and trend. It is not the first experiment of this type conducted by Google on Discover, just think that only last year Big G had tested a scrollable banner inserted at the top of the page and including the information discussed above (weather, sport and finance). That user interface, significantly different from the one currently being tested, has never been made available to everyone. We just have to wait to discover the fate of the new one.

Google begins to replace Snapshot

Some users have begun to see a fourth new tab within the Google app: it is dedicated to topics of interest to the user and, as far as we know, it could take the place of Snapshot.

The first sightings were made, paradoxically, in the version of the Google app for iOS devices. The new tab does nothing but takes the user to the notifications section for topics of interest to them. In the application for Android devices, the fourth slot was designed to give access to the Snapshot function (Overview of the day) but, as we told you a few weeks ago, the Mountain View giant has decided to completely eliminate this convenient function – at present when you open it, you will find the notice that reads “The Overview of the Day feature will be discontinued shortly. You can still ask the assistant for updates on calendar events, birthday reminders, stock prices, and more.

The following image allows you to understand how the new tab dedicated to notifications works: although in this case none are shown, the user is invited to activate the bell – you can see an example in the second screenshot of the previous paragraph – when performing searches in order to receive updates on topics of interest.

One cannot fail to notice a certain similarity with the functioning of Google Discover, even if in this case the focus is more restricted, concerning only the topics for which the user has actively expressed the desire to receive notifications.

How to update Google Discover and Google apps

The new Google Discover cards are currently being tested and not many users have already received them; Google’s new notifications tab currently only appeared in the iOS app. In any case, you can download the most recent versions of both apps for Android directly from the Google Play Store by clicking on the badges below.

Samsung DIY repairing

Samsung is making it easier for users to fix their devices by expanding its DIY repair program. In a recent announcement, Samsung shared that over a dozen new devices will be included in the Self-Repair program. Among them are the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5, marking the introduction of DIY repair options for Samsung’s foldable phones.

The Self-Repair program will provide users with access to parts and guides for fixing their devices at home. Samsung [Samsung Newsroom Post] is taking a step towards empowering users to take control of their device maintenance, offering support for popular devices like the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5 in this latest expansion.

Until now, Samsung mainly provided DIY repair options for its regular smartphones, tablets, and laptops. However, when it came to the more intricate foldable models like the Galaxy Fold and Flip, the company limited users to professional repair services due to the complexity of these devices.

Now, in a noteworthy move, Samsung is expanding its DIY repair support to include its foldable models, starting with the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5. This means users will soon have the option to tackle repairs at home, marking a shift in Samsung’s approach to empower users in maintaining and fixing their foldable devices.

This development follows Google’s recent introduction of DIY repair options for its Pixel Fold, though it’s worth noting that repair parts for the Pixel Fold can be relatively expensive, such as the inner screen alone costing $900. As Samsung joins the DIY repair trend for foldables, it’ll be interesting to see how this impacts the accessibility and affordability of maintaining these innovative devices.

The full list of new Self-Repair options for Galaxy devices includes:

  • Galaxy Z Fold 5
  • Galaxy Z Flip 5
  • Galaxy S23
  • Galaxy S23+
  • Galaxy S23 Ultra
  • Galaxy S23 FE
  • Galaxy A05s
  • Galaxy Tab S9
  • Galaxy Tab S9+
  • Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra
  • Galaxy Tab S9 FE
  • Galaxy Tab S9+ FE
  • Galaxy Tab A9
  • Galaxy Tab A9+
  • Galaxy Book 2 Pro (15-inch)
  • Galaxy Book 2 Pro 360 (15-inch)

Samsung is making its Self-Repair program available to more people around the world. The program is spreading to South Korea and over 30 European countries, including places like Denmark, Greece, Hungary, and Portugal. However, it’s important to note that, as of now, these new devices are not yet supported in the United States, and parts are not available from Samsung’s retail partner, iFixit.

HarmonyOS Next

Huawei’s big boss just hinted at exciting new things for their software in 2024! Expect fresh products built on their latest HarmonyOS NEXT system.

During the Fan Club (Pollen) Annual Conference 2023, Yu Chengdong announced that Huawei plans to reveal several advanced products next year. He also predicted the launch of HarmonyOS NEXT products and improved native application experiences in 2024.

The CEO didn’t share when exactly the new software and native applications would be released, but we can anticipate the official reveal to happen in early 2024.

Huawei needs to make HarmonyOS fully independent and essential without relying on Android libraries soon. Hopefully, the company will speed up its efforts in the coming days.

Many app developers, such as Alipay, McDonald’s, HiPaint, Bank of Communications, and others, have joined native app development for HarmonyOS. The goal is to create a strong app ecosystem independent of Android and iOS.

Huawei is set to offer HarmonyOS-based courses, with approval for 55 projects and over 10 universities planning to launch these courses soon.

Huawei plans to introduce apps in more than 18 categories, focusing on digital and financial sectors. According to Yu Chengdong, these native HarmonyOS applications aim to be smoother, smarter, safer, and more comprehensive compared to iOS and Android.
