According to the news, Google, Apple, Microsoft, and Mozilla  Are work together to improve browsing quilty and user experience. No, doubt Browser is a most useful thing and most used our phones and Pc or laptops, Extensions are also useful for users, No matters that was  Chrome extensions, Firefox add-ons, or extensions for Safari. however, Developing is not easy for Developers Because these are totally different from each other.

WebExtensions Community Group

WebExtensions Community Group’s (WECG) mission is to make it easier for developers to create extensions. To accomplish this, participating browser vendors want to use this community to specify a consistent model of functionality, APIs, and permissions. WECG also wishes to improve the overall dependability of extensions by laying out an architecture that improves performance and security.

They will develop a specification using the existing extensions model and APIs supported by Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Firefox, and Safari as a foundation. We hope to find common ground, bring implementations closer together, and chart a course for future evolution,” the W3C Team wrote in the announcement post.

However, this does not preclude browsers from introducing new APIs to support specific use cases. W3C clarified in the same post that the community will not specify every aspect of the web extensions platform.

“We have no plans to specify, standardize, or coordinate extension signing or delivery. Each browser vendor will continue to operate their extension store completely independently, with their own technical, review, and editorial policies,” according to the post.

They’ve helped other browser developers to join in on this effort. It will also request contributions after releasing the first draft of the specification. If you want to learn more about how this initiative will affect you as a developer, you can read the full charter on GitHub.

At the time of the Chrome 88 version, Google released the Manifest V3 extension specification, which set a new direction for the development of extensions for future browsers with the Chromium kernel.

Recently, Google publicized its Manifest V2 “retirement” plan on its official website. There are two key points in time:

  • January 17, 2022: The Chrome Web Store will no longer accept new Manifest V2 extensions. Developers can still push updates to exist Manifest V2 extensions, but cannot submit new Manifest V2 extensions.

  • January 2023: Chrome browser will no longer support running Manifest V2 extensions, and developers cannot push updates to exist Manifest V2 extensions

We understand that Manifest V3 is more secure, has higher performance, and has better privacy protection than its predecessor. In the past few months, Google has introduced other mechanisms in the new scripting API and extended the declarative Net Request API to support multiple static rule sets, filtering based on tab IDs, and session-scoped rules.

Google said that in the next few months, it will also introduce support for dynamically configurable content scripts and memory storage options, as well as other new features.
