HarmonyOS Leads Over iOS in China: 6th Quarter Running

Huawei’s HarmonyOS continues its ascent in the mobile OS sector, having secured a lead over iOS in the Chinese market for six consecutive quarters. The company’s broader ambition is now to position HarmonyOS as a major competitor to Android’s global market share.

Android currently dominates the global smartphone OS market with a 79% share. Huawei, however, has announced plans to compete directly with this US giant through its new ‘NEXT’ initiative.

In accordance with Counterpoint’s Q2 2025 report, Android leads globally but is losing ground in China to Huawei’s rising HarmonyOS.

In accordance with the firm, Android faces challenges in China from competition and in India from premiumization. However, brands like Honor, Motorola, Samsung, and Vivo provided crucial support globally.

On the other hand, iOS also stood up globally by 1% increase in its market share. It has shown great performance in various markets like India, the Middle East, and Brazil.

Apple’s iOS achieved its highest upgrade rate in the second quarter, a surge attributed to the availability of cost-effective iPhones and the release of the iOS 26 update.

But when it comes to China, iOS continued to be pushed back by Huawei’s HarmonyOS for the 6th consecutive quarter. A major credit goes to the new Nova 14 models and the iconic Pura X foldable. Both models have gained huge attention.

Huawei’s Pura X launched with HarmonyOS NEXT, introducing advanced features like eye-tracking and a super AI assistant.

The Nova 14 series appeared as the first regular phone product to pre-install the stable HarmonyOS 5.0 and unlock a more reliable user experience.

The consistent growth of HarmonyOS, making it China’s number two OS for six quarters, was largely due to the major contribution of the Huawei Nova series and the successful launch of the foldable Pura X, Counterpoint said.

Following this, Huawei plans to expand HarmonyOS 5.0 globally, beginning with wearables and tablets. A key question remains when the OS will challenge Android’s monopoly in the global smartphone market.

Huawei HarmonyOS 6.0

The “NEXT” suffix was originally used to show that HarmonyOS had completely moved away from being based on Android. If they remove it now, it could mean that Huawei sees “HarmonyOS” as a finished, independent brand and no longer needs to highlight its break from Android’s past.

The company is currently rolling out the developer and closed beta version of HarmonyOS 6.0. Although both update changelogs show different names of HarmonyOS.

HarmonyOS NEXT is the new, fully separate version of the operating system that can only use apps made for HarmonyOS. It doesn’t use any Android code.

In accordance with users, the name HarmonyOS NEXT seen before the new version installation. But after downloading the latest build, only the main term – HarmonyOS displayed on their phone’s screen.

To provide you with a more accurate and comprehensive response, I need to gather some factual information first. I can look for news, official announcements, or leaks regarding Huawei’s naming conventions for their upcoming products.

Huawei introduced HarmonyOS 5.0 last year as HarmonyOS NEXT. The company added the term ‘NEXT’ to its software, defining next-level features and capabilities of its software, such as softness, security, and native intelligence.

The upcoming version of Huawei’s operating system, once thought to be HarmonyOS 5.0, is now being called HarmonyOS NEXT in updates. However, another change from Huawei is expected shortly.”

From a branding standpoint, which name do you think is more effective for Huawei’s new ecosystem, “NEXT” or “6.0.
