Huawei FreeBuds Pro 2 will have dual drivers, Devialet tuning & ANC

In collaboration with French audio specialist Devialet, Huawei will soon release the second-generation TWS buds, the FreeBuds Pro 2. Devialet tuned the new in-ear headphones, which feature effective active noise cancellation.

The Huawei FreeBuds Pro 2 is the company’s first Bluetooth headphones in collaboration with Devialet. The French company is best known for its elaborately designed and expensive speakers, and it is said to be in charge of tuning the integrated speakers in the Huawei earbuds.

The switch to dual drivers will significantly improve; with one driver handling the bass and the other the mids and highs, the second-generation buds will have a frequency response range of 14Hz to 48,000Hz.

Huawei FreeBuds Pro 2 Design facelift with recognition value:

The Huawei FreeBuds Pro 2 resembles its predecessors in appearance. They are, however, less angular and have rounded corners. In this way, Huawei maintains the recognizability of its predecessors while refreshing the design.

While the Huawei FreeBuds Pro 2 will continue to be available in black and white, a new color, light blue, has been added. The IP54 certification makes the headphones suitable for sporting activities as well. The Devialet logo has now been emblazoned on the back of the charging case, which has changed very little in shape.

Huawei FreeBuds Pro 2 Two drivers and Devialet vote:

The Huawei FreeBuds Pro 2 comes with two drivers per earpiece. I’m not sure if this is a dual driver system like the Redmi Buds 4 Pro or a hybrid driver system like the Soundcore Liberty 3 Pro. Whatever the driver system looks like, it is very likely that one driver is in charge of the midrange and bass and the other is in charge of the treble.

The audio specialists from the French manufacturer Devialet tuned the system. Huawei has previously used this technology, such as on the Huawei Sound X and the Huawei Sound Joy Bluetooth speaker.

Furthermore, the Huawei FreeBuds Pro 2 Hi-Res have already been certified. This means that, as with the Huawei FreeBuds 5i, we can assume that the LDAC or LDHC codecs are supported.

Huawei FreeBuds Pro 2 improves ANC:

Huawei promises improved noise reduction, with ambient noise reduced by up to 47 decibels. It remains to be seen how well this works in practice. It will be a hybrid ANC once more, with three microphones per earpiece, two on the outside and one on the inside.

The microphones include AI support, which aids in the reduction of background noise during phone calls. Huawei has demonstrated in the past that they can produce high-quality headsets, and I am hopeful that the FreeBuds 2 Pro will do the same.

Huawei FreeBuds Pro 2 Long-lasting performance:

Huawei claims a runtime of 6.5 hours with ANC enabled. More than the predecessor, because ANC only provided 5 hours of runtime. As is customary, the manufacturer’s value will most likely differ from the practical value. Without ANC, a total runtime of up to 30 hours should be possible. The headphones can be charged via USB-C or wirelessly, but wireless charging takes significantly longer.

Huawei FreeBuds Pro 2 assessment:

The Huawei FreeBuds Pro has been on the market for quite some time, and it’s past time for a replacement. I’m hoping that not only the design is a good development, but that the technology is as well.

On paper, the innovations appear promising. The potential is there with dual drivers, improved ANC, and finally a high-resolution audio codec! The headphones will most likely be priced at around €200 (roughly 200 USD) when they first hit the market. That seems a little high to me, but let’s wait and see how the practical test goes.
