Cybercriminals are targeting the Google Play Store apps, which have over one billion downloads

According to a new report from BleepingComputer based on findings from a Zimperium study, several seemingly harmless productivity and gaming apps accessible on the Google Play Store were built solely to steal your banking details.
According to the report, mobile banking trojans are hidden within these apps and activate when you open a legitimate banking or financial app. To get access to account credentials, they fool users by showing a phony login page over legitimate pages. The malware also keeps track of alerts in order to obtain the OTP and is capable of committing on-device financial theft by abusing Accessibility features.
The top ten most harmful trojans target 639 banking apps with over a billion downloads. Users in the United States are the most vulnerable, not only because three out of every four banking customers in the country use an app for their everyday activities, but also because 121 of the apps are specifically designed for Americans. The UK comes in second with 55 applications, followed by Italy with 43, Turkey with 34, Australia with 33, and France with 31.

PhonePe, a popular payment app in India, is the targeted app that has received the most downloads and it has received 100 million downloads on Google Play Store. Furthermore, many banking trojans target the cryptocurrency trading app Binance, which has been downloaded 50 million times, and the US and UK-based mobile payment provider Cash App, which has also been downloaded 50 million times.
The global online banking platform BBVA, which has tens of millions of downloads, is the most commonly targeted app. This software is reported to be the target of seven of the 10 most common banking viruses. Teabot, which affects 410 of the 639 programs examined, is the most common malware. Exbot, which affects 324 apps, is the second most common trojan.
Other trojans that were active in the first quarter of 2021 include the following:
- BianLian is a malware that targets Binance, BBVA, and a number of Turkish apps.
- Cabassous is after clients from Barclays, CommBank, Halifax, Lloys, and Santander.
- Coper may take over accounts from BBVA, Caixa Bank, CommBank, and Santander.
- Barclays, Intensa, BancoPosta, and a slew of other Italian apps are among the targets of EventBot. This one uses Microsoft Word or Adobe Flash to hide its true identity.
- PayPal, Binance, Cash App, Barclays, BBVA, and CaixaBank may all be affected by the aforementioned Exobot.
- FluBot affected BBVA, Caixa, Santander, and a number of other Spanish apps.
- Medusa was a banking app that targeted BBVA, CaixaBank, Ziraat, and Turkish banks.
- Binance, BBVA, and Coinbase were all hit by Sharkbot.
- PhonePe, Binance, Barclays, Crypto.com, Postepay, Bank of America, Capital One, Citi Mobile, and Coinbase are among the companies targeted by Teabot.
- BBVA and a number of EU-specific bank apps are among the targets of Xenomorph.
As shown above, each of the top 10 banking trojans has its own rather narrow targeting scope, ensuring that the ecosystem is balanced and that operatives can select the tool that best suits their target demographic.
Keep your smartphone up to date, only install apps from the Google Play Store, read user reviews, visit the developer’s website, and keep the number of installed apps on your device to a minimum to protect yourself against all of these hazards.

Google Pixel Fold: A new foldable phone from Google

Google announced its first foldable phone, the Google Pixel Fold, at the I/O 2023 Developers Conference. The Pixel Fold is a book-style foldable phone with a 7.6-inch internal display and a 6.2-inch external display. It is powered by Google’s Tensor chip and runs Android 14.
In addition to the Pixel Fold, Google is also rumored to be working on a clamshell foldable phone similar to the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4. This phone is said to have a 6.7-inch internal display and a 2.1-inch external display. It is expected to be powered by Google’s Tensor chip and run Android 14.
It is unclear when either of these phones will be released. However, Google’s entry into the foldable phone market is a sign that the category is becoming increasingly popular.
Google is rumored to be working on a clamshell version of the Pixel Flip folding phone. The phone is expected to be released in 2024 and will be powered by the Tensor G3 chip. It is also expected to be more affordable than the Pixel Fold, which costs $1,799.
The clamshell design is similar to the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 and Motorola Razr 5G. This design allows the phone to be folded in half and opened like a book. The Pixel Flip is currently the only foldable phone from Google. It was released in 2022 and has a starting price of $999.
The Tensor G3 chip is the successor to the Tensor G2 chip that powers the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro. The Tensor G3 chip is expected to be more powerful and efficient than the Tensor G2 chip.
The Pixel Flip clamshell foldable phone is expected to be a more affordable option for consumers who want a foldable phone. The phone is also expected to be more compact and portable than the Pixel Fold.
Other foldable phones have larger secondary screens, so it’s unclear how big the Pixel Flip’s will be.

Google Chrome browser now corrects URLs automatically

Google announced today that, as part of Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD), it will introduce automatic URL error correction for the desktop version of the Chrome browser. Additionally, they mentioned plans to extend this feature to mobile devices in the coming months.
In Chrome, when you type a wrong URL, it will alert you if there’s a spelling error. If you enter an incorrect web address in Chrome, the browser will notify you about any spelling mistakes. Chrome will let you know if there’s a spelling error in the URL you entered, helping you avoid mistakes while browsing.
Google’s latest feature aims to assist individuals with dyslexia, language learners, and occasional typists by helping them identify and rectify errors in URLs. This feature ensures that they can easily access the intended websites without any confusion or mistakes.
