Foreign media Windows Latest reported that Windows 11 is getting a new feature called “Focus Sessions”, which is a simple and effective productivity system that will prevent you from procrastinating or distracting, so you can focus on getting your work done.
The Focus Sessions function is part of the native clock application of the operating system. The idea is simple: set a timer, choose your task from the Microsoft To-Do list, choose the music you like, and then work until it ends. You can also take a break and repeat the process in cycles until your work is over.
By default, the timer is set to a 30-minute working period, which is long enough to keep you engaged. It seems to be based on Pomodoro (Pomodoro clockwork method) technology, and users can also configure a 5-minute break, which allows you to have the opportunity to check emails without losing focus.
Of course, you can also use a stopwatch or any timer application to track your time, but a dedicated “Focus Sessions” feature in Windows 11, when you use it correctly, will definitely make life easier. It saves you the trouble of configuring third-party applications or accounts.
To start working, you need to choose a task from the Microsoft To-Do list. If there is no task, you can create one directly from the clock app.
Once it is done, tell Microsoft how much time you have, and Windows will set up the rest. You can access the settings of the clock app to change the duration of the timer, and enable or disable the integration of To Do and Spotify.
The clock application currently provides support for the following key periods.
- Automatic (based on AI)
- 15 minutes
- 30 minutes
- 45 minutes
- 1 hour
You can work until the timer runs out and then rest for 5 minutes (default). You can also skip the rest time, or use 10 to 15 minutes of rest time instead.
You can also play the alarm notification during the focus period or at the end of the rest period, and the alarm notification will appear in the notification center.
Spotify music integration in Windows 11
As mentioned earlier, Microsoft has integrated the Spotify feature into the Clock app, which displays shortcuts to favorite playlists (if you have them) and recommendations for popular background relaxing music.
The clock application will not play Spotify music. It will open the Spotify Microsoft Store application in the background and synchronize the music with the work agenda. If the application is not installed, Microsoft will download and install Spotify music for you.
You can select the playlist and click “Play Music” under the timer to play music on the dedicated Spotify client.
