Android 17 Supercharges the One UI Always-On Display.

Android 17

At present , the AOD is great for checking the time or seeing a notification icon without waking your phone, but it doesn’t show much and uses extra battery. With the upcoming Android 17 and One UI, Samsung is planning a major improvement to make the AOD more useful and less of a battery hog

Android 17’s ‘Min Mode’ will let your favorite apps create their own custom, full-screen Always-On Display. Imagine your music app showing a full album art display, or your fitness tracker showing a detailed workout summary—all without waking up your phone. It’s more information, designed to use very little battery.

To ensure ‘Min Mode’ doesn’t drain your battery, it runs on the same energy-saving engine as the regular AOD. Your screen stays dim and simple. For an app to join in, its developers simply need to create a special, minimalist screen. When you set your phone down, Android automatically switches to this power-efficient view.

To prevent screen burn-in, it will move pixels slightly every minute. This allows apps to provide useful information at a glance without draining the battery.

Think of it as swapping the full-color, detailed map on your phone for a simple, printed road sign. Google Maps’ new AOD mode does just that—it gives you only the crucial directional cue you need (like ‘Turn Left in 200 ft’), displayed in a simple, power-saving black-and-white format on your locked screen.”

The ultimate goal is to make ‘Min Mode’ available to all app creators. This means your favorite weather, fitness, or news apps could soon display their key info right on your dimmed screen. With Android 17, the AOD is evolving from a basic clock into a smart, interactive hub that saves you from constantly unlocking your phone.”
