How to get a GMS notification on Huawei HMS

Published

on

Huawei Mobile Services

As we know it Huawei does not implement any of Google’s services above all its smartphones. This tough decision was taken by the company after it was banned in the US.  So, If you have bought a smartphone that has been made after this decision, then you will not have GMS (Google Mobile Services) in it.

Huawei’s smartphone users get the facility of HMS (Huawei Mobile Services) instead of GMS (Google Mobile Services) which is more than capable but unfortunately, some apps require GMS for their notifications. So let’s check how you can fix this?

Enter microG. microG is a free-to-use “re-implementation of Google’s proprietary Android user space apps and libraries”. Basically, it adds some of the functionality of GMS to your smartphone.

Step 1

Go to https://microg.org/download.html

Step 2

Your devices browser should tell you when each download has finished. This is usually by a little bar at the bottom of the browser which will also have the option to open the download. Press on the open option and follow the instructions to install it. The first time you do this you may be told that you need to give the browser permission to install applications. If so simply follow the instructions on your screen and allow it.

Step 2

Step 3

Look for the microG settings. This will be wherever your apps are, be it on the homepage or in the app drawer depending on how you have set your launcher. the icon will look like this

Step 03

And once open you will see this

Step 03 part 01

Click on Self-Check at the top and you will see

Step 03 part 02

Follow the instructions you see above to give microG the permissions it requires. Just touch where it says and approve the permission request that will pop up. For the location one I suggest setting it to always have access to your location. The same applies to the battery optimisation. You should then see this.

Step 03 part 03

And can now proceed on to.

Step 4

Press the back arrow at the top left to return to the microG settings then press where it says Google device registration. You should see this.

Step 04

Press the grey bar where it says Register device and it should change to look like this.

Step 04 part 01

Now press the back arrow and repeat this for Cloud Messaging and Google SafetyNet. The wording in the grey bar will be different but it will work the same way.

Ignore the Account option as you will not be able to add an account as it will always fail and is, in my experience, not necessary.

Step 5

Might not be necessary but it wouldn’t hurt to reboot your device.

Once your device has restarted you should be good to go.

Huawei plans to develop a new version of its Celia assistant, featuring upgrades like 5.5G and AI capabilities. The company announced this at the 2024 Mobile Communications High-Quality Development Forum on June 7.

At the event, Huawei’s Senior Vice President, Cao Jibin, discussed how teamwork can usher in the era of 5G-A technology in the region.

Cao also announced that Huawei plans to develop a new Celia super assistant with 5.5G network technology and advanced AI features.

This new Celia assistant will be built on the Pangu AI large model. Since Huawei is set to launch the Pangu Model 5.0 at HDC 2024, this technology is expected to be integrated into the new assistant app.

Currently, the Celia voice assistant uses Large Language Model (LLM) AI and advanced algorithms. However, Huawei aims to make it even smarter and more efficient for users. Cao believes these enhancements will better meet users’ needs.

“Huawei is the first company to introduce AI into smartphones. In the next step, we will build Celia into a super assistant based on the Pangu model, integrating the capabilities of 5G + AI to provide users with better devices.” – says Cao Jibin.

Apart from the Celia assistant, Cao Jibin discussed the benefits of 5G-A technology, also known as 5.5G. This advanced network offers faster, more stable, and more functional mobile communication compared to previous versions.

Over the next 5-10 years, 5G-A will become more powerful and benefit individual users, families, offices, and other settings. It will also boost digital transformation and introduce various AI facilities for customers.

Cao mentioned that the demand for smart technologies will increase by 100 times, and AI computing will grow by 500 times. Despite slow progress in chip production, he is optimistic about future improvements.
