The US has placed tighter limits on Huawei’s 5G technology suppliers

Huawei's 5G technology

As it tightens its hold on Huawei, the Biden administration is sticking to the policies adopted by the previous administration. Certain companies that had previously obtained export licenses for dealing with the telecom equipment manufacturer have been subjected to tougher conditions.

The US government has imposed new restrictions on goods used in or with 5G products, according to a Bloomberg article. According to sources close to the case, the latest 5G ban went into effect this week. The Biden administration has imposed a new restriction on the export of components for Huawei 5G devices, such as semiconductors, antennas, and batteries, with the new law. To put it another way, the licensees would be subjected to a more uniform prohibition.

For those who are unaware, a few American companies have previously obtained licenses allowing them to continue shipping components to the Chinese tech giant, which could potentially be used in the manufacture of their 5G equipment. Previously, the Trump administration had put Huawei and other Chinese firms on the ‘Entity List,’ a trade blacklist that allowed US-based businesses to obtain a license to trade with the brand.

Now, it appears that the latest move by the Biden administration is moving forward the restrictions put by Trump on the firm. Furthermore, this reflects the new administration’s intention to take a hard line against China and Chinese businesses. “From one perspective, it’s clean-up and fixing errors from the previous administration,” says William Reinsch, senior advisor at the Centre for Strategic and International Studies.

Huawei Pura 80 Global: EMUI 15, Not HarmonyOS

Huawei Pura 80

Huawei’s Pura 80 series just launched around the world, but there was a surprise for fans: these new phones are using EMUI software, which is based on Android, instead of Huawei’s own HarmonyOS. This wasn’t what many loyal Huawei users were hoping for.

When the Huawei Pura 80 series launched in China with native HarmonyOS, global users got their hopes up. However, those hopes were dashed when the international Pura 80 models were revealed to be running EMUI 15 instead.

Essentially, the US government placed restrictions on Huawei a few years ago. These restrictions made it very difficult for Huawei to use certain American technologies and services, including Google’s Android services (like the Play Store and Google Maps) and the microchips needed to run many advanced features.

HarmonyOS was created to be its own operating system. However, early versions included Android parts, which was smart. This allowed Huawei to keep existing EMUI apps working, rather than forcing users into a HarmonyOS-only app world immediately.

Huawei spent several years developing its own dedicated app environment behind the scenes. They intentionally let users continue using their existing EMUI/Android apps until their mobile technology was fully optimized for native applications.

HarmonyOS NEXT, introduced in early 2024, signaled Huawei’s native OS shift. This version supports only pure HarmonyOS apps, shedding its Android past. Since its announcement, Huawei has engaged thousands of top Chinese app developers to build native apps, which largely appeared on AppGallery in 2024.

In China, HarmonyOS boasts a flourishing native app ecosystem. However, outside of China, it’s the complete opposite. Because there aren’t enough native apps, Huawei has no current roadmap to bring its own OS to global users.

Global Huawei Pura 80 models feature EMUI 15, not HarmonyOS, due to app compatibility needs. Even so, EMUI 15 integrates numerous HarmonyOS 5 features, such as advanced AI and personalization.”

Huawei is planning to release a new 2-in-1 laptop, likely called the MateBook E, which will run on their own HarmonyOS 5.0. They haven’t given an exact release date yet, but they’ve hinted that it will come with some impressive new features and improvements.

At their HDC 2025 event, Huawei announced two new HarmonyOS computers coming out this year. One of them will even have a really cool “detachable keyboard” design.

According to the Weibo leaker @FixedFocus, Huawei is getting ready to release a new 2-in-1 HarmonyOS PC. Many believe this will be the MateBook E 2025, which would be a timely update since the series hasn’t seen a new model since 2023.

The tipster also mentioned that this new PC will be incredibly versatile. They mean it’ll be super easy to continue using apps across different devices, transfer data seamlessly, and connect to multiple devices without any hassle.

The addition of the HarmonyOS PC software system means Huawei’s HarmonyOS is now on a wider range of devices than ever. It’s now available on PCs, alongside smartphones, wearables, earbuds, tablets, smart cars, and home appliances.

As a result, it is quite easy to explore an application on Huawei PC, tablets, and smartphones. One can have a seamless experience between all these devices.

It is been three years since Huawei updated its MateBook E, which is a device that’s both a tablet and a laptop. They’ve improved many other product lines, but this one has been waiting since 2022.

It really seems like Huawei’s next HarmonyOS PC will be the MateBook E 2025, considering what Huawei themselves hinted at and what a recent leak suggested.
