Huawei Plans Big Ascend 910 Shipments Despite SMIC Problems

The US is making it harder for Huawei to get AI chips, but Huawei still plans to sell more than 700,000 Ascend 910 chips in China. Analysts are sharing how many they think Huawei will ship this year.
Mizuho, one of Japan’s biggest banks, predict that Huawei will likely ship over 700K Ascend 910 AI chips in 2025.
Despite SMIC having trouble making enough 7nm chips, Vijay Rakesh, an analyst at Mizuho, says Huawei will sell a large quantity of Ascend 910C AI chips in China.
We expect Huawei to sell numerous Ascend 910A, B, and C chips (700,000+) in China in 2025. The problem is that SMIC, the factory making them, is not getting good results – only around 30% of the chips they produce are usable.
SMIC had trouble making enough 7nm chips last year, and these chips are used in the Ascend 910C. Nevertheless, previous news says Huawei still intends to ship many of these chips in China, despite difficulties with production and getting supplies.
Previous year, SMIC did not make many of the 7nm chips that the Ascend 910C uses. But earlier reports say Huawei still plans to start shipping a lot of these chips in China, even though they have problems making them and getting the parts.
Ascend 910C – Nvidia H100 alternative:
People think the Ascend 910C can compete with Nvidia’s H100 AI chip. It combines two 910B chips to be very powerful (800 TFLOP/s). The DeepSeek group said it’s about 60% as good as the H100 at figuring things out.
Experts also explained that Nvidia’s sales in China might keep going down. This is because the US has recently put new limits that stopped Nvidia from shipping their H20 chip to China, which is a big market for them.
New US rules on chip controls say that anyone globally using Huawei AI chips now needs a special license. Ignoring these rules will lead to strict punishments.

Ascend 910 chip
China has pushed back against the US for wrongly using export rules and constantly targeting just one company. The Chinese government said they will stand up for the legal rights of their own businesses. It will be interesting to see how much this helps Huawei achieve its AI chip plans.

Samsung’s Android 16 news was a surprise.

Google is launching Android 16 early, even for Samsung phones, starting this summer.
During their I/O 2025 event, Google highlighted numerous new features that users can expect in the upcoming Android 16. Additionally, they offered a preview of their Material 3 Expressive design language. This new visual style will be introduced over time to the broader Android environment and across all of Google’s applications and services.
Android 16 makes Pixel phones more personal with new colors and bold text. This makes Pixel and regular Android phones feel unique.
The Android 15 update on Samsung phones is very different. This made it late. The One UI 7 Beta was delayed from July to December, and the regular update from October to April, a roughly 6-month delay.
After the big delay with One UI 7, Samsung fans worried One UI 8 would also be late. But Samsung and Google have already made an official announcement, so hopefully, it will be different this time.
Samsung announced that Android 16 will arrive on Galaxy phones during the summer of 2025, so sometime in June, July, or August.
I was really surprised to hear about Android 16 for Samsung phones announced by Google. I have followed Samsung for five years, and this feels like a big change in how they handle software.
Samsung used to announce its software updates when they launched new Galaxy phones and at their yearly developer event. The test version of their software (One UI Beta) usually started about three months before that developer event.
We are anticipating Samsung to launch their new foldable phones, the Galaxy Z Flip7 and Galaxy Z Fold7, around early July, and they will probably have the new Android 16 software, which is called One UI 8.
Android 16 is near, so Samsung needs to finish the Android 15 update (One UI 7) for all Galaxy phones. Many cheaper phones still need it.
